The latest Brushless Flat DC-Micromotors in two diameters with integrated electronics by MicroMo
Posted Mar 27 2010
MICROMO expands its line of FAULHABER flat DC micromotors. The two new offerings provide diameters of 15mm and 26mm. The new precious metal commutated DC micromotors provide robustness and electronic commutation. With nominal voltages of 6 or 12 volts, the 15 mm diameter motor provides a continuous output torque of 0,6 mNm. The 26 mm diameter version provides output of 3,8 mNm. Also, the output torque can be increased up to 30 or 100 mNm with gearmotor versions of the new drives.

White Paper: A Practical Use Of The Motor Constant KM

DC Motor/Generator Technical Note. A Practical Use Of The Motor Constant KM. An Aid In The Selection Of DC Motors Or Generators In Power Limited Or Efficiency Sensitive Applications.
Frequently a dc motor or generator specification will include the value of the motor constant KM, which is the torque sensitivity divided by the square root of the winding resistance. Oftentimes even seasoned dc motor applications specialist will view this intrinsic motor property as a somewhat esoteric figure of merit useful only to the motor designer. The feeling is that motor constant KM has no real practical value in selecting and dc motors and generators in the real world.
Nothing could be further from the truth! Utilizing this figure of merit properly will substantially reduce the iterative process in selecting a dc motor or generator since it is generally winding independent in a given case or frame size motor or generator from a given vendor.

Determining Voltage Ratings of Current Mode Stepper Motor Windings and Current Mode Ratings of Voltage Mode Stepper Motor Windings
Many stepper motor manufacturers give performance curves for stepper motors with Voltage Drives and Current Drives. Indeed, curves for L/R drives, a derivative of the Voltage Drive, are sometimes given too.
Some manufacturers even make a differentiation between “Voltage Mode Motor” and a “Current Mode Motor”. This injects a high degree of confusion into the selection and application of stepper motors.
As it relates to MicroMo’s stepper motors a “Current Mode Motor” is typically a lower voltage winding. Simply thicker wire with fewer turns so that it draws the rated power at a lower voltage. The new 22 mm motor series AM2224, in the lower impedance windings, simply rate the motor both ways, for a Voltage Mode and a Current Mode.

FAULHABER's DC-Micromotors have a Self-supporting Skew-wound Copper Coil
Filed under: DC Motor
The main difference between FAULHABER DC-Micromotors and conventional DC motors is in the rotor. The winding does not have an iron core but consists of a self-supporting skew-wound copper coil. This featherweight rotor has an extremely low moment of inertia, and it rotates without cogging. The result is the outstanding dynamics of FAULHABER motors.
For low power motors, commutation systems using precious metals are the optimum solution because of their low contact resistance.

MicroMo Electronics Offers the AM 2224, a Compact Powerhouse 22 mm Stepper Motor
Filed under:
MicroMo is presenting a new 2-phase Stepper Motor with a diameter of 22 mm and a very high power-to-volume ratio. The AM 2224 achieves an output of 2.5 W and a peak holding torque of 45 mNm – a superior performance for this frame size (? 22 x 25.9 mm). There are 3, 6, 12 and 24 Volt versions available as well as 0.25 A and 0.50 A. The motor processes the transmitted control signals with extreme accuracy. This allows an angular step of 18° (even smaller in micro-stepping). In an open control loop this makes it possible to run rotary speed profiles or build up a positioning control. The use of expensive servo components can usually be avoided. After switching off, the motor maintains its present position exactly. Like brushless motors, stepper motors do not have any mechanical commutation, so service life is only limited by the bearings.
